Description
When Elector Karl Theodor, the unloved Wittelsbach on the Bavarian throne, decided to give the people of Munich a park, he commissioned Friedrich Ludwig Sckell to create an English garden. From the very beginning, he had in mind a park that would serve as a 'general amusement', i.e. that would benefit all residents of the city – not just the nobility. Moreover, the enlightenment ideal of the equality of all people was to find its expression here, for example that the lower classes in this garden did not even have to take their hats off to the higher ones ... Paradisiacal conditions! And indeed: Sckell created a paradise in Munich that is unparalleled to this day. If you follow the winding paths through shady trees and over sparse meadows, the gentle vibrations of the hills, the viewpoints such as the Monopteros or the secluded places far away from the hustle and bustle, you can feel that an oasis has been created here in which one place of power follows another place of power. This tour leads through the southern part of the English Garden and invites you not only to experience the park as a leisure centre, but also to trace the subtle network of lines of force, symbolic plantings, hills and valleys, streams and floodplains, old trees and monuments. This tour is dedicated to the English Garden as a mystical place. As a landscape that, when consciously walked on, delights the soul and inspires the spirit – and expands our consciousness.Includes
