Once you arrive in Neuschwanstein, you will be taken on a guided tour of the castle, which was built in the 19th century in the neo-Romanesque style. The castle sits atop a craggy mountain with commanding views of the village of Hohenschwangau below. From the Marienbrücke bridge, you have a breathtaking view of the castle, which was commissioned by King Ludwig II of Bavaria as a royal retreat and in honor of the composer Richard Wagner. After the death of Ludwig II, the castle was opened to the public in 1886 and today has more than 1.3 million visitors a year. Neuschwanstein has been featured in numerous films and also served as the model for Disneyland's Sleeping Beauty Castle. You will walk through a beautiful gorge with cascades and waterfalls. And on the way back, you'll make a stop at the Wieskirche, a church built in the 17th century and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You also have the opportunity to visit a Bavarian cheese farm, where you can buy an optional cheese and sausage platter with freshly baked bread.
