Isar River

The Isar river is, indeed, one of Munich´s natural treasures and provides a variety of recreational opportunities. The Isar river, that sources in the Austrian region of Tirol, is one of the city´s most famous recreation areas.

Besides a number of outdoor activities, such as river rafting or fishing, the river banks are just made for sunbathing right in the middle of the city center. Those, who do not mind nudity, can also enjoy sunbathing, as in many areas around the Isar river nudists are accepted.

Along the banks you can find some wonderful picknick spots and in designated areas, you can bring a BBQ grill and set it up directly at the water. In the summer, it can get very crowded on particularly hot and sunny city days.

A particular area in the southern part of the city (Thalkirchen), called Flaucher is well known for its beautiful landskape and for being one of the best places around the river for spending a day out.

As bicycles are the most used vehicles among Munich´s residents anyway, cycling along the river side is also highly recommended. Just behind the Deutsches Museum  a cycling path passes four different bridges towards Munich´s zoo "Hellabrunn". Continuing on the same path you will reach a woodland called "Perlacher Forst". Crossing the small forest, the track will lead you back into the city center close to "Saebener Platz".
