Uncover Munich's Myths, Legends, and Hidden Secrets
Our journey takes us through the winding streets of the Old Town to uncover the folklore locals grew up with. You’ll learn how the mythical Lindwurm was once blamed for spreading the Black Plague through Munich, and why the Schäffler (the city’s coopers) performed a famous dance to lure citizens back into the streets after the epidemic ended, a fascinating tradition that continues to this day, more than 500 years later.
Near the iconic Frauenkirche, you’ll hear the poignant tale of a church bell said to 'wish' it could return to its true home. At the grand Promenadenplatz, you’ll stop by a surprisingly modern tradition: the colorful, informal street shrine dedicated to the 'King of Pop,' Michael Jackson.
From Royal Scandals to Medieval Markets
The tour also dives into the lives of Munich’s former rulers, the Wittelsbach dynasty. We will explore the old myths about the virtues that supposedly made the royal family 'chosen to rule,' and discover how those very same legends inspired a highly unusual tradition still practiced today. Near the old Affenturm (Monkey Tower), you'll hear the bizarre historical tale of how a runaway royal pet monkey nearly caused a massive royal tragedy.
Bavarian Beer Culture and Quirky Laws
No Munich tour is complete without a look at its world-famous food and drink culture. At the historic Hofbräuhaus, you’ll meet Aloisius, the stubborn Munich angel who decided that the lively beer hall was far superior to heaven on earth. Finally, you’ll find out how the extreme generosity of the legendary 'Pretzel Rider' led to a highly surprising city law that actually made giving away pretzels for free illegal!
