Munich is known worldwide for its historic buildings – the Frauenkirche, the Residenz, and the Hofbräuhaus. But the city also has a completely different side: modern architecture, hidden between the old facades, surprisingly innovative and often only visible at second glance. On this tour, you will discover the city center from a completely new perspective. We start at Marienplatz and, right at the Old Court, immerse ourselves in the tension between medieval history and modern interventions. Continue to the Fünf Höfe, a fascinating ensemble of historical palaces and contemporary architecture with glass passageways and an urban flair. The Literaturhaus shows Munich's spirit of optimism in the 1990s, while the Salvatorparkgarage is an unexpected example of functional architecture with history. At the Maxburg, we discover the post-World War II reconstruction, which combines old forms with a modern architectural style. Under the Stachus, a look into the basement leads us to a world of concrete, escalators, and passage architecture from the 1970s – a part of everyday life in Munich that is often overlooked. With the new Hotel Königshof on Karlsplatz, we experience a current example of Munich's transformation: a striking new building that is the subject of heated debate in the city. In the Hofstatt, shopping architecture and historic walls come together, before we visit the award-winning synagogue at Jakobsplatz – a symbol of Munich's Jewish life in modern architecture. Finally, our path leads to the Schrannenhalle: a place where historic iron construction meets contemporary market culture. This city tour shows you Munich beyond the Baroque and the Middle Ages.
