Description
Join our official, accredited 'Explore Munich' tour guides for an educational and reflective visit to Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial. Located half an hour from Munich, this site was the first Nazi concentration camp, opened on 22 March 1933 shortly after Adolf Hitler became Chancellor.
Originally for political prisoners, Dachau became a model and training center for other concentration camps. Over twelve years, more than 200,000 people were imprisoned here, including political opponents, Jews, priests, Romani people, homosexuals, Jehovah's Witnesses, and prisoners of war. These prisoners endured forced labor, medical experiments, and torture. Over 40,000 were murdered during the camp's operation.
On 29 April 1945, American troops liberated the camp, finding around 32,000 survivors. Today, the Dachau Memorial preserves original buildings and exhibitions to promote reflection and awareness, encouraging a commitment to peace and human rights.
