Description
Together with me, Peter, and my sister Michaela, we explore the edge of the forest along the Isar. I'll start with the history of the river: how the Isar used to be unpredictable, how it shaped the lives of Munich's residents, and how the old floodplain landscapes became a protected natural area. You will learn why the riparian forest is so rich in species and why plants have been collected here for centuries.
At the edge of the forest, my sister takes over. She is a certified herbalist – a modern herbal witch in the best sense of the word: knowledgeable, down-to-earth and with a deep understanding of the plants of the region. She will show you typical seasonal wild herbs, explain their characteristics, and tell you how they were used in traditional medicine. This includes applications for minor injuries, respiratory problems, digestion, or simple home remedies that were once taken for granted.
We talk about how people in the Alpine region collected, dried, and used herbs long before there were pharmacies. Many of these plants still grow right along the path today: leaves in spring, flowers and aromatic herbs in summer, seeds and roots in late summer and fall. Michaela explains which parts are edible, which ones are best avoided, and how to avoid typical mix-ups.
Not a classic run-of-the-mill guided tour – this tour combines knowledge of nature, ancient healing traditions, and the history of the Isar River in a clear, understandable walk. You will experience how closely the flora of the riparian forest was connected to people's everyday lives and how much of it has been preserved to this day. An easy, informative tour for anyone who wants to get to know Munich through the river, the forest, and knowledge.
