Siegestor
Munich
The Siegestor or Victory gate is known to be the forth city gate in Munich. But it is newer as it was only built in the 19th century by Ludwig I. King of Bavaria.
The gate was originally dedicated to the glory of the Bavarian army but today the Siegestor is a monument and reminder to peace.
The inscription on the back side reads 'Dem Sieg geweiht, vom Krieg zerstört, zum Frieden mahnend', which can be translated to 'Dedicated to victory, destroyed by war, reminding of peace'.
The gate itself, which is located close to the University, also divides the intersection of the Ludwig street and the Leopold street into the two districts Schwabing and Maxvorstadt.
