Directions to St. Ludwig Kirche
The St. Ludwig´s Church is located opposite of the Theatiner church, very close to the Ludwig-Maximilian-University. Its towers mark the skyline of Schwabing and Maxvorstadt, as the towers can be seen if you come from Schellingstrasse and walk straight in direction of the university.
St. Ludwig's Church was built in New Roman Byzantine style and offers a great number of admirable monumental wall paintings. The interior shows frescos by Peter von Cornelius and exudes a peaceful, romantic atmosphere.
You can also find a copy of Michelangelo´s 'Das jungste Gericht'. The original is placed ion Rome and is known to be be the largest fresco ever painted.
St.Ludwig's was built in 1829-44 by Friedrich Gartner and was used as both the university and parish church. King Ludwig I of Bavaria gave the order to build the church.
The church was heavily damaged during the War, but repair work was finished in 1958.
